random thoughts - The American way of life

So many Americans will tell you that, without a doubt this is the greatest country in the world. We are the worlds hegemon. Because of our standing in the world we look down on those from poorer nations. We claim that they are so unfortunate to live without all the advancements of American society, and so therefore it becomes our duty to push our way of life onto them. This Ideology is all wrong.

Who's to say that a farmer who tends to his cows 12 hours a day in rural Ukraine is living an unfortunate life? Some would say the simplicity of his is what makes it fulfilling. I say, if people are happy and content with their lives, who are we, as Americans to impose judgement? There is no right or wrong way to live. If some 20 year old in africa is dirt poor, but has a loving family, and can provide them with all the food, water, and clothing they need, then his life is no worse than any happy American, only different.

IF you look back at history, imperial Britain often tried to their societal values, customs, and government throughout the world. Look what ultimately happened to the British empire. I have no doubt that eventually the U.S. fill fall as the worlds greatest power, just as every great power has done throughout history.

Maybe it would be wise for us to take a step back, and look at the world from a different point of view. Maybe our government should do the same. Look at the war on terror. We can kill a terrorist, but another will always take his place. ITs truely not a war that can be fought with guns, its an ideological war. As long as they see us, and our way of life as a threat we can't win.
